When it comes to side dishes, there’s nothing quite like warm, slightly sweet, and perfectly soft and moist cornbread.

Simple Cornbread Recipe

Originally part of Native American cuisine, this southern staple is the perfect pair to many main dishes and has definitely earned its spot as one of the all-time favorites on any dinner table in America! And when it comes to a classic comfort food like cornbread, you’ve got to have it homemade and serve fresh from the oven. That’s why I’m bringing you this surprisingly simple cornbread recipe. It’s soft and buttery on the inside with a crunchy crust that will make you fall in love with cornbread all over again. For more kitchen shortcuts, check out these other easy Bisquick recipes.

Tips & Tricks For Making The Best Cornbread

Follow these tips and tricks for the best cornbread of your life! Everyone loves light and fluffy cornbread. The key to that perfect fluffy texture is to avoid making it too dense. Don’t over mix and definitely don’t use an electric mixer! Once you get all the ingredients in a bowl, use only a spatula to mix. When everything is combined and moist, it’s ready to be poured into your baking pan. They’ll be soft and fluffy, just the way you like it! Speaking of soft and fluffy, another tip to achieve this is to let the mixture sit for 15 minutes before baking. This allows the dry ingredients to absorb all those flavors and gives the baking powder some time to get airy, without over mixing. Many people swear by making cornbread only in a cast iron pan. If you’re going this route, no need to grease the pan! Part of the reason why cast iron cornbread is so popular is that it adds a delicious crisp on the bottom. I would always recommend using real Bisquick, but if that’s not available, you can also try a different brand or even a simple pancake mix. It will be slightly different in flavor and texture, but it works in a pinch! A little too sweet for your taste? Decrease the sugar to 3/4 cup instead of 1 cup. You can also use other sweeteners such as Splenda. Coconut sugar is another great substitute for white or brown sugar because it’s a 1-for-1 substitution. You’ll still get the same soft, moist texture, plus an extra layer of coconutty flavor!  If you’re trying to stay away from gluten, you can also use gluten-free Bisquick. The first time I made this for my family, they couldn’t even tell the difference! Remember not to overmix, simply fold in your extra ingredients. If you’re not quite sure if your cornbread is ready after 35 minutes of baking, stick a toothpick into the middle of the cornbread. If the toothpick comes out clean, your cornbread is ready to go! Cornbread doesn’t last very long at room temperature, so it’s best to serve them right after baking. If you have leftovers, you can keep them in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for up to six weeks.

Add-Ins & Variations

Want to add something extra into your cornbread? Try jalapeños! If you’ve never tried this before, you might be surprised that these two are actually the perfect pair! Cut up some of those delicious peppers and add it to your batter for an extra kick of flavor. Trust me, you’ll never have cornbread any other way again. Other delicious add-ons to your cornbread batter are sharp cheddar, crunchy bacon bits, real corn kernels, or some fresh herbs like rosemary, sage, or thyme. The best time to add in these extra treats is right after you’ve stirred that batter evenly.

What to Serve with Bisquick Cornbread

Looking for the best dishes to serve with your very own Bisquick cornbread? Whether you’re craving something savory or sweet, I’ve got something for you! Sticking with our southern theme, barbecue pairs perfectly with buttery cornbread. Whether you’re making BBQ ribs, pulled pork, brisket, or BBQ chicken, cornbread is the perfect side. Thinking of having cornbread for a snack or just a light meal? Have some greens on the side! Greens, kale, and spinach pair deliciously with cornbread. You can even have them with fried fruits like bananas or apples. Aside from serving it with something savory, another one of my favorite ways to have cornbread is as a dessert. Yep, these tasty little squares don’t always have to be a side dish, they can also be the star of the dessert table! To do this, simply make a glaze and pour it over the cornbread. My favorite is a salted honey butter glaze!
