Can we all just agree that using the air fryer method for cooking is the best? It doesn’t really matter the type of sausage that you use as this cooking method works perfectly with all different kinds of sausages. I love using mild Italian sausage for this simple recipe, but you could totally use hot Italian sausage or any other type of pork sausage that you’d like. (If you want to cut down on the higher fat content of pork sausage, you could even use turkey sausage as well!)
Air Fryer Italian Sauage Recipe
Since we make this recipe quite a bit, we stick to air frying what we love. I’ve gotten this Italian sausage recipe down to a science since it’s such an easy dinner. The family even agrees that the leftover sausage tastes just like it comes out of the air fryer oven the next day! Anytime I don’t have to run to the grocery store for something new for dinner, I call that a mom win! Leftovers of this air fryer sausage recipe make for two days of super simple meals! Once you realize how simple it is to cook up uncooked sausages in the air fryer tray, it’s game on!

You can add whole sausage links or cut up your favorite sausage into smaller segments and add it directly to the air fryer. Depending on the size of your air fryer will depend on how many you can add. Use this recipe for Italian sausage links as a great way to use simple ingredients with tasty red peppers, bell peppers, and onions. I love this low carb recipe because it fills my belly without filling me full of carbs!

How To Make Italian Sausages in Air Fryer with Peppers and Onions
NOTE: This recipe was made in a basket style 5.8 qt Cosori Air Fryer so make sure to adjust your total cooking time depending on the size and style of your air fryer.
Variations
If you want to add the sausage to hot dog buns, you can easily make killer sausage, onion, and pepper sandwiches! If you want to skip the buns, serve them over caulirice or by themselves. Add a bit of heat and spice to your serving only by sprinkling on some cayenne pepper to the mixture! If you’re a fan of dips, a tad bit of marinara sauce goes a long way!
How long do Italian sausages take to cook in an air fryer?
The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the sausage, but you can expect a cooking amount of time to be anywhere from 10-17 minutes. The easiest way to ensure that the sausage is cooked all the way is to check the internal temperature of the sausages. Using a digital meat thermometer is your best bet, and it should show an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees.
How do you know when Italian sausage is cooked?
The easiest way is to check the internal temperature, but if you don’t have a meat thermometer, the only thing that you can do to check if the sausages are done cooking is to cut into the center and visually inspect. Sausages should be done if they are firm in texture and the liquid or juice that comes out is clear. If you see any pink at all, they need to cook longer in the air fryer.
Can you overcook sausages?
You can. While you want to get that outer crispy skin, don’t take it too far. Pay attention to the cooking times because overcooking can happen. Make sure that you’re adding them to the air fryer basket in a single layer so that they’re all cooking evenly as well. If you overcook the sausage, you can still eat them, just know that you may have a tougher sausage to chew than you want.
Can you cut Italian sausage before cooking?
If you want to open the package of uncooked sausage and cut them into smaller portions, you can. I’ve just found that cooking them whole keeps the juices in better and makes for a nice crispy roll!
How to store leftovers
The best part about making healthy recipes that make a lot of food is that you’ll have some left for the next day. All you need to do is let the sausage, peppers, and onions recipe cool down and then store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. When you’re ready to reheat, you just add the main dish to a microwave safe container and heat it right back up! You’re going to love the flavor of one of my favorite air fryer recipes!
